1-1 Jump Start

So you have finally decided to write UPSC exam and you want to know what is the syllabus and whether you are eligible to appear for the exam, which coaching centre is best, how many attempts are permitted,etc,etc,etc......

1-2 : Choose ONE OUT OF FOUR : Syllabus
There are FOUR different syllabus You have to choose ONE among them.

 

1. Indian Civil Services Syllabus (IAS )

2. Indian Engineering Services ( IES)

3. Indian Forest Services Syllabus(IFS)

4. Indian Economic Service / Indian Statistical Service Syllabus(IES / ISS)

1-3 : Watch for Civil Service Exam Notification

For Civil Service Exam ( ie. IAS, IPS, etc), Applications are called for during

November/December

Preliminary Exam will be conducted in May and Main exam will be after 5 months of Preliminary Exam.

1-4 : Watch for Engg Service Notification

For Engg Service Exam, Apllications are called for in the month :

January/February.

Preliminary Exams will be conducted in May and Main exam will be in June/july

1-4 : Eligibililty

Eligibility to write Civil Service :

Any degree such as BA,BSc,MA,MSc,BTech,BE,MBBS

Age : Between 21 to 30.

Eligibility to write Engineering Service(IES):

Any Engineering Degree (some of the MSc degree also eligible)

Age : Between 21 to 30.

Where you will be posted?

Those who passed IES under Electronics and Telecom Engg Category will be posted in one of these:

(i) Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers
(ii) Indian Railway Stores Service
(iii) Indian Ordnance Factories Service
(iv) Indian Naval Armament Service
(v) Assistant Executive Engineer (in Ministry of Defence)
(vi) Engineer in Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing/Monitoring Organisation
(vii) Assistant Naval Stores officer (in Indian Navy)
(viii) Survey of India Service

Paper - I ....150 marks.......General Studies
Paper - II ...300 marks..... One of the subjects from this list ;

CS (Main)

Papers IV & V....600 marks.....General Studies

Why dont you try Civil Service Instead of Engg Service?

Even though you are an Engineering Graduate, you are eligible for appearing CIVIL SERVICE also.

For an example, you can take

MATHS for IAS(prelim) and

MATHS&PHYSICS for IAS(Main).

Some UPSC FAQ

Q1. What is the restriction on number of attempts in Commission’s Examinations?
Ans. Number of attempts :-
(1) Civil Service Examination - General-4, OBC-7, SC/ST- No restriction
(2) IFS Examination- General-4, OBC-7, SC/ST-No restriction
There is no restriction on number of attempts in any other Examination conducted by the Commission.

Q2. Can a candidate who has completed his education from an open school/ University apply for Commission’s Examination?
Ans. Yes, provided it is a recognized University and he possess the educational qualifications prescribed for the exam and is otherwise eligible.

Q3. Whether a candidate belonging to a community included in the OBC list of states but not in the Central list of OBCs is eligible for age relaxation, reservation etc. for Commission’s Examinations?
Ans. No. Only candidates belonging to communities which are included in the Central list of OBC’s are eligible for such concessions.


Civil Service Examination

Q.1. Can a candidate choose an optional subject, which he has not studied at graduate/PG level?
Ans. Yes.

Q.2. Is it necessary for a candidate to take the same optional subject in the Main Exam, which he had taken in the prelims Examination?
Ans. No.

Q.3. If a candidate has applied for the CS (P) Examination but has not appeared at any paper in the CS (P) Examination will it be counted as an attempt?
Ans. No. An attempt is counted only if a candidate has appeared in at least one paper in CS (P) Examination.
